Growing the Asheville Burlesque Community

It has been almost a year since Deb au Nare's Burlesque Academy of Asheville officially started taking students! As our long time performers left the city for greener pastures, I wanted a way to help grow our dwindling burlesque scene in Asheville. I started off with just the Burlesque 101 series taught by myself as a way to help people who maybe heard of burlesque but weren't sure how to get their foot in the door. Now it has turned into multiple series' of classes, teachers and shows. The Burlesque Academy now hosts a bi-monthly graduation show for new students to debut their acts as well as sponsoring a monthly event that gives new and established performers a space to perform and network. We have Queen April teaching her signature Sass Class regularly and have had guest teachers like local photographer, Myriah Wood, as well as Tiny Tulips and Sadie Hawkins traveling from out of state to teach and perform! It has been a dream of mine for years to be able to start a burlesque school and it is both exciting and unbelievable that it has happened!

I love seeing the new faces upon the first day of class in the Burlesque 101 series and watching like a proud mother as they debut their graduation acts for the first time after the series is over. Even more than that though, I love watching everyone's journey and seeing my students grow into these strong and unstoppable forces to be reckoned with! This coming year, we are going to keep on growing and I can't wait to see what adventures will come next!
